As I'm sure you are probably already aware the penryn(45nm) chip was just released with 2 different models available. You can get:
Yorkfield (Quadcore)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115035
(kinda available but ridiculously expensive)
also, you can look at the chip that Cole and Penguin are going to purchase:
the Q9450 Yorkfield is a 2.66Ghz quadcore with 12mb of cache
it is coming out in mid march, it will be $320. Capable of 4+ ghz, but will need extreme cooling to do it (water) or 3.6-3.8 on air.
or
Wolfdale (Dualcore)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115037
the E8400 Wolfdale is a 3.0Ghz dualcore with 6mb of cache and is already available for $240ish. It is also capable of 4+ Ghz, but on a sufficient air cooling set up.
There are several other Wolfdales scheduled but the one listed above is definitely going to be the best bang for the buck. There wont be another out that will give you the performance per dollar.
What it boils down to is that a same clocked quad vs a same clocked dual, will give you similar results in current games, but the quad will future proof your system better, and handle multi threaded programs twice as fast (like movie incoding), but a higher overclocked dual core will beat out a lower clocked quad in current games. If your not going to run water cooling, go dual core.
Here is my full build
https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wi ... =New+Build
I will be able to push my CPU just hard as cole can push his... As a matter of fact, if i have the same memory/motherboard/Vidcard and i get a stable 4.2 and he's only able to get a 4.1 then i will actually look stronger than him in 3dmark03.
or, you can wait until the nehelm(sp?) comes out.. it should be coming out at the end of the 4th qtr of 08. So... as long as you dont do something stupid like buy the phenom, your good to go!
