prices are going down and you can find good deals out there. I bought my 9800 GTX+ for 150 and I think the GTX260 is even at about 170-180.

The GTX 260 is going to be driven down some more soon, there are many flavors of the GTX/S line here is some explination

GTS 250 = the old G92 (8800gt(s), 9600, 9800) processor, its not even the GTX200 processor, it is effectively a 9800gtx+ re badged, optimized (slightly higher clocks, smaller board)

GTX 260 = the lower level of the GTX200 processor, comes in 3 flavors, unfortunately they are all called GTX260. They all have 448 bit interface, with 896mb of memory, though they are 3 different processor configs (and all have the same name):
1) GTX 260 (oldest) 65nm processor (larger chip/runs warmer) locked down to 192 stream processors
2) GTX 260 (old) 65nm processor (runs warmer) same as above, except 216 stream processors, so more powerful
3) GTX 260 (newer) 55nm processor (runs cooler) 216 stream processors, same power as above, but just runs cooler, can clock higher.

GTX 280 = The old high end GTX card, 65nm (warmer), all 240 stream processors unlocked, 1gb memory and 512 bit interface

GTX 285 = The same thing as the 280 except the shrunk down 55nm processor

GTX 295 = Twin GTX 260s (the 3rd one I listed, latest and greatest) strapped together with a cooler in-between, so its actually 2 cards in one package (only one connector). This is the most powerful card on the market today.

Upcoming:

GTX 275: This card is the more or less based on the 260 board, with the 285 processor: 448 bit interface, with 896mb of memory, but the 240 processors on 55nm. This will drive down the cost of the 260s, and will be in the 250 range to beat the ATI new upcoming 4970.

New GTX 295 = they are in the works of a cheaper one like ATI does, that is 1 card with 2 processors, instead of 1 cards strapped together.

my main problem is if i play the newer source engine based games(L4D/HL2:EP2) with my comps normal resolution(1680x1050) it lowers the fps a lot. the only way to play with steady fps is to lower the resolution to about 1280x768 ish on low settings(aiming for 1680x1050 on high), so would getting the first GTX260 you showed solve this problem?or would i get more bang for my buck if i wait for the newer ones?

Get either the 2nd or 3rd GTX260 (I linked the 3rd).

Luckily newegg shows the difference in its searches, you can search by cpu size and by stream processor count.
