Haven't really read much recently but I just got £65 to spend in Waterstones so yeah :)

But in the not too distant past I read The Wasp Factory, Captain Corelli's Mandolin and a whole load of books by Christopher Brookmyre.
Oh and A Man for all Seasons but that was in school

I'm not one to make America sound good or anything but that's the worst stereotype I've read all day!

Dude, come to the Mississippi Delta. I wrote so many loans where my recipients signed with an X.

Its truly disheartening. Bad part is though, why educate yourself. The government will pay you more to remain lazy/stupid than you can make if you got a job @ mcdonalds/taco bell.

There's a saying that in the delta the soil's richer than the people there.

Because that is all that they have ever known.

Some of the people in the delta are fourth-fifth generation welfare. It is all that they have known. They were put on "stupid checks" before they could really walk. They were discouraged to do well in school because it would cause their parents to lose another check. A majority drop out/fail. Some sell drugs, some get on another welfare check, and some work for farms/catfish farms. Its a really weird world up there.

I used to do some work in a town called Belzoni, MS. It was great to be there around the last/first of the month because on the last day of the month it was a ghost town. There were hardly any cars on the roads, no one was walking the streets. It was barren.

1st and third come around...BAM. There are so many people it seriously takes time to get through a small town of MAYBE 1000 people. Cars are blocking everything. Hundreds of people walking the streets.

Everyone got their "disability" checks etc., though some walked 2 miles from their house to the bank to cash them. ;)

Its another world there.

It gets really bad when certain people stop bathing. The smells that come off some of the kids in my school are nauseating. Chris's post hit the nail on the head too.
