Pushing un tested updates on us again.

Yesterday they updated steam client, breaking every single person's ability to get into their servers, until you update the servers. Ok, so I update my server. Of course, every time you update the server it deletes your motd.txt (the screen you see when you get into a server, currently the forums screen) and the mapcycle.txt files, and puts in the default ones. That is ok, I have backups...

Then today Lucky says the server is down, I log into my server, I get the message from my server provider:

Hello,
Valve released a mandatory update today for all HL1 based games. There seems to be a problem with the way the updated server reads the ban list which causes the server not to respond.

The fix:
After you have ran the "Steam Update Tool" from your control panel, you must click on the "File Manager" icon and browse to the /czero/ directory. From this directory you must either delete or rename your "banned.cfg" file. Almost immediately after doing this the server will come back online (no restart required).

So I rename my banned.cfg file... but wtf, now everyone will be unbanned if I do that, that is lame!!!

So I run ANOTHER update on the server, and it does update another file, I rename the banned.old back to banned.cfg and we are back in business... oh wait, have to restore my backup of motd and mapcycle!!!!

i think Valve is amazing!! how could you criticize them for not testing their updates? lol but seriously, glad it all worked out :D

that really sucks. and the server has been really laggy lately also, and it freezes for like 15 seconds like its going to crash, then comes back. and now, it crashed and its not coming back...

update = uber lame

steam = uber gay

uber lame + uber gay = STEAM SUCKS

I seriously question why they would even put out anything that was untested like this. It f'd over alot of people who play, not to mention the days that the server is down is still payed for. :evil:
