$316 for a chip that will blow the doors off any current chip, a current core 2 quad or AMD Phenom would have to be clocked to 3.2 to keep up with this chip, and even worse, this chip will do 4 to 4.5ghz on air, and run cooler than the current chips.

Already have my power supply and a 140gb 10k rpm raptor drive, case came in today, going to order the motherboard and chip as soon as it comes out. Going to borrow some ram while I overclock, and put in a old PCI video card (from like 1999) while I overclock it for about a month. Then order a vid card and memory.

I got the raptor for free, and its too expensive to buy a second one, and I refuse to sell computers to people with a raid 0 setup, unless they are really tech savvy, cause there is a higher likelihood of failure, and this is just a 1 year use computer, then I am building my "uber-rig" 8core nehalm, ddr3, raid 0 (maybe solid state raid setup, if they get faster) water cooled, etc.

And if the chip came out today, this is the board I would get, X38, cause it has PCIexpress x16 "2.0" which will support all the next gen cards, and has DDR2-1200 (ddr3 is still too expensive and pointless until the prices match DDR2).

To add to this, I just got done reading an article where they took the 8500, simple overclock from 3.1 to 3.66, then with a slight bump in voltage it went to 4.37 stable. It ran at a good 70C under load at that.

So, if the dual core sample runs that well under air cooling, throw in some water.. And you've got yourself a chip that can handle 4.5 flat out, no problems, as Cole has stated.

FYI, I've been off due to the winter rush at work, and friends in from college. Expect to see me back VERY soon after break's over.


I might just hold off till Nehalm next year, if my computer can make it. I'm in desperate need of 2g's of ram now, new games are thrashin' my computer.

It's startin' to crap out on me.. Might be lookin' at my first build soon. :?

I might go with the same build as Cole's, wont bother over clockin' till I get a nehalm though.

Thats has to be with the stock cooler though, 70 is WAY too hot for these chips. When I worked with last year's quads after about 8 hours of prime, would get near 70 with a Zalman, but that was a 2.66 running at 3.2.

I have read plenty of reports of the QUAD 3.0 going to 4.0-4.4 on a slight bump in voltage, running prime95 for hours and about 55c with a zalman 9700. I bet the dual would never even hit 36c with the 9700.

I am going to shoot for 4.0ghz, cause I know 4.4 is do-able, but 4.0 will run like 10 degrees C cooler.

My roommate's 2.13 OC-ed to 3.4 from a small volt bump, 1.325 to 1.425 (1.55-1.6 is the max you want to run them), and runs about 38-42c under dual prime 95 load for 24 hours. From everything I read, the new quads will run the same temp as last years duals.

Im expecting mine to be about 36-40c while playing cz, maybe 45 in source, 50s in crisis, and in the low 30s idle. Pretty much the exact same as my 2.75ghz AMD x2 4800+ ran (volted at 1.525 vs 1.35 default).
