My friend got internet on her computer today, and her computer is acting super slow.
I was wondering what programs she can use to help speed up her computer.

Also any good anti-virus programs.

Thanks <3

Also when she is on internet explorer she gets lots of pop-ups :(

Did she have to install unnecessary crap that the provider gave her?

I'd suggest her downloading Firefox, or some other internet browser. I find it a lot better, easier, and manageable. As well as a lot less pop ups, or she can download a nice free pop-up blocker.

As for an anti-virus program, I'd say maybe AVG. It's pretty user friendly, and does the job.

Now for the computer running slow, I'd tell her to go to her control panel, than to the Add or Remove Programs tab, and remove any unnecessary programs. You may have to supervise her on that one, determining what is necessary, and what isn't, can be tricky at times.

I've also found that using ALT + CTRL + DEL and ending dumb processes that don't need to be running at the time does wonders for your CPU Usage. Most of the time, when your computer is running slow, it's the CPU Usage that is causing the problem.. The lower the better.

Not really a whiz or anything, and not sure any of this will help her much, but some input is better than no input.

Few things she can do.

Get better pc for once (obvious)

Uninstall unnecessary programs.

Defragment hard drive

For anti virus and firewall I would recommend comodo firewall and AVG. They are both free and good to use.

To make the pc start up faster, tell your friend to go to start>run Then type msconfig and go to the startup tab. There tell her to uncheck all the unnecessary programs.

Yea, I helped her download firefox. and I'll tell her about un-installing some of the unneeded programs.

She didn't have to install stuff from the internet provider.

I just think she has a lot of junk in her computer. my computer has less memory and I think a weaker processor and my computer wouldn't run as slow.

Actually I think the computer has many virus. That's why it is running slow :(

Thanks for the help guys :)

This is weird.

The icons on the desktop disappear and the task bar at the bottom disappears....I also checked the processes and there's probably over 40....

I don't know what to do about that :(

ALT + CTRL + DEL > New Task > type "explorer.exe" without the quotations. That should fix it.

Also is there a program that can look up files that have been deleted?

bahaha they will tell you it has something to buy their products.

Anyway, I dont suggest you end processes if you don't know what they are. If it's really slow just tell her to back up her music and personal data and do a fresh reinstall.
