i think my dad might have a virus on his comp, its an old hp nc8000 laptop and its running windows xp pro on it. hell load up the op system, and itll get to the login, and the desktop, but then it wont stop acting like its loading up. like the light that shows its working wont turn off. he cant run anything past it, so i was wondering if there was a virus.

a virus/adware scan might help

might just be the windows registry filled with too much junk on startup

Probably malware, so start of with what cursed said: download here - http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Probably try a disk clean up and other stuff whilst your at it.

are you able to open it in safe mode?

If so...

Go to start>run Type CMD in the box that pops up.

In the black box type chkdsk /r

Its going to tell you...blah blah blah... ntfs... cant run right now, would you like to schedule upon restart? type y, press enter

Restart the computer.
