| Post subject: | So, I'm selling my computer |
Or, sold for that matter. A 13 year old kid took interest in all the lights and how cool it looked and told me that his sister broke his old computer. Natrually, I took advantage of the situtation and told him I'm selling it for a minimal $1200. Now, obviously you could build mine for 1100-1200 nowadays, but yeah... shhh.... So, I'm going to be using my very old Dell desktop (2.4 P4; 1GB of RAM; GeForce 5200) very soon! All I need is (well, from just Cole mostly) - is a period of time when it would be good to start buying and building. I was looking for something in the $2000 dollar range, but I won't have it all until the end of march (yet once I do... I would really want to start building as soon as possible). So, any help would be nice. I really want to get a nice set up going on this one, say 2 Video Cards in SLi, etc. Water-cooling is def. something to do, however if the cost of it does not outweigh the pros of my doing a SLi setup with a decent CPU, I figure it's not worth it; I've been totally happy with air-cooling, even with the constant noise and occasional cleaning sessions. |

As I'm sure you are probably already aware the penryn(45nm) chip was just released with 2 different models available. You can get: Yorkfield (Quadcore) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115035 (kinda available but ridiculously expensive) also, you can look at the chip that Cole and Penguin are going to purchase: the Q9450 Yorkfield is a 2.66Ghz quadcore with 12mb of cache it is coming out in mid march, it will be $320. Capable of 4+ ghz, but will need extreme cooling to do it (water) or 3.6-3.8 on air. or Wolfdale (Dualcore) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115037 the E8400 Wolfdale is a 3.0Ghz dualcore with 6mb of cache and is already available for $240ish. It is also capable of 4+ Ghz, but on a sufficient air cooling set up. There are several other Wolfdales scheduled but the one listed above is definitely going to be the best bang for the buck. There wont be another out that will give you the performance per dollar. What it boils down to is that a same clocked quad vs a same clocked dual, will give you similar results in current games, but the quad will future proof your system better, and handle multi threaded programs twice as fast (like movie incoding), but a higher overclocked dual core will beat out a lower clocked quad in current games. If your not going to run water cooling, go dual core. Here is my full build https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wi ... =New+Build I will be able to push my CPU just hard as cole can push his... As a matter of fact, if i have the same memory/motherboard/Vidcard and i get a stable 4.2 and he's only able to get a 4.1 then i will actually look stronger than him in 3dmark03. or, you can wait until the nehelm(sp?) comes out.. it should be coming out at the end of the 4th qtr of 08. So... as long as you dont do something stupid like buy the phenom, your good to go! |

SLI is overrated, In most cases you can spend the extra money somewhere else and get better results. I think my budget for my PC is around 1600 or less, and I am doing a QUAD 4.0+ ghz 45nm core (penryn based), 4gb of ddr 1066, dual raptor hard drives (not needed but I already have one, so going raid 0 on that bitch), X38 motherboard, water cooled, and a 9800gt (comes out in about 30 days), or a 8800gts 512 (g92). Talk to me about SLI on teamspeak and I will explain to you what it will do nothing for you, unless you play at 2000x1600+ resolution. |

^btw, that explanation is a great one. I was very surprised, but he has graphs to explain in full detail and everything... he is prepared. |

Been talking to the kid's parents. Have been for a week now, they told me they'd pick it up today and give me half the money tonight, and the other tomorrow. Kind of irritating, but even worse - they phoned me and told me they were backing out. They didn't specify a reason, and I didn't ask for it either. I'm pretty angry now, and a grand short for a new computer. So, I've got to back out on the build and it will take me a couple of more months to actually do it. I really want to go all out on it, and don't really won't to settle on anything less. Sorry |

That really sucks!!!! Look on the bright side, if there's a major design flaw in the new 45nm's and it only shows up after 2 months of use after it blows up my motherboard, we'll find it and your free of any headaches from it. So. check the silver lining. besides, you have a GREAT rig, i know someone out there will want it... |

Anytime you want to try to overclock it, talk to me in TS, you should be able to get 3.1-3.2ghz out of it with no heat/stability issues. |
